The following article was published by the Coast of Halifax on March 5, 2009.

Tomorrow it will be precisely one year since Lezlie Lowe wrote her insightful article. I would invite you to read it again.

One year later Brindi’s still at the pound waiting for an uncertain destiny.

A week ago we were contacted by the Free Brindi camp. They asked for our help in order to save the life of one dog and return her to her beloved owner. A dog that had come to represent the rights of every single dog and dog owner in Canada.

We didn’t jump into it blindly. We took some time, read all material available, researched the Law, precedents and similar cases all around Canada.

We discovered a case mishandled from the very beginning. A case where the City of Halifax has gone as far as ignoring the Supreme Court in an effort to get its way, to save face, to fulfil the egos of the bureaucrats “in charge”.

We took up the mission of helping Free Brindi and reunite Brindi with her owner, Francesca Rogier. And we did so by unveiling a campaign that fully utilises the potential of Social Media. We called our campaign 13 days for Brindi, a countdown until the judge takes a decision on Brindi’s future. We have always been confident in the wisdom of Canadian justice but we thought it may be a good idea to seek the support of both the national and international community.

Here is a brief balance of the results of this campaign until today:

Blog: Our blog, canada.myletsadopt.com is currently being read by over 250.000 people daily and the numbers are growing constantly. Half of them are visitors who come back to the blog each day. The majority of those visitors are in Canada and the United States, the rest are scattered all around the world.

People as far away as France, UK, South Africa and Turkey are taking action.

Respected Bloggers affiliated with the No-Kill Movement have taken notice too.

Facebook: Our posts are being sent out by the entire Let’s Adopt! network and by two groups exclusively dedicated to Brindi. A total of of nearly 45.000 people are receiving daily updates on the Brindi case. Most of them are sharing those posts in their pages thus helping us spread our reach.

Twitter: The Twitter Community has also been a great support to our campaign. We don’t have an exact number but a quick search yields thousands of results.

All of this social media support has turned into a Public Relations nightmare for the Halifax Regional Municipality and pressure is mounting on its Mayor, Peter Kelly.

The Halifax Municipality is taking the official position of not answering any comments on the case but it would be naive to think they are ignoring the issue. The Backlash has been so enormous that it is threatening to put a cast on Mr. Kelly’s political career.

These numbers are proof of the incredible potential of Social Media helping push for social change.

In November, the execution of a dog, Oreo, by the ASPCA created an uproar of such magnitude that prompted to re-evaluate the laws and put into question the credibility of the ASPCA and its president within the animal welfare community.

Brindi is following into the footsteps of Oreo and The Canadian and international opinion now strongly points in her favour.

Is there Justice in Canada?. We hope so.

We will know it in precisely six days.

It is time for Brindi to go home and to be reunited with her owner, Francesca Rogier.

If you are in Canada please CALL Mayor Peter J. Kelly, Mayor of Halifax on ph: 902-490-4010 and tell him that Brindi must be spared AND returned to her owner.

If you are abroad please email kellyp@halifax.ca and express the same… We have 6 days left.…

  • this dog, and halifax, sadly represent what happens when people in power lose sight, of the insight, and degenerate into pointless pissing contests and muscle flexing. the authorities here have carried so far away from where this all started and this case has mushroomed out of control.

these "people" seem to have forgotten that there is an innocent, traumatized dog and his heartbroken person, in the middle.

    • Very well said…lets save Brindi please!

  • Excellent.

  • Sweet! This is a situation that has languished for too long within the confines of Halifax. Suffice it to say the time has divided many people only because they have lost the focus of the case:

Dog gets loose, doesn't have her muzzle on and scuffles with another dog along the property line. Dog is seized and sentenced to death. Owner appeals to Supreme Court. Wins. City lays charges against owner, owner found guilty. Dog's fate in limbo.

In other cases like this, the owner is fined — as backed up by the city's own record of A-300 By-Law violations that have gone to court.

    But not this time.

Thank you for bringing the real issue of this case back into focus. Now maybe we can get some justice for Francesca and Brindi. Let them be reunited to get back to the life they had together 19 months ago.

    Kudos, Let's Adopt! Canada.

  • Posting from Moncton, N.B.

I called Mayor Peter Kelly. I spoke to the receptionist who informed me that the office has received hundreds of phone calls in regards to Brindi! I am pleased to hear this however I am disgusted that not enough has been done. I could not obviously speak to Mayor Kelly as he is in meetings – I would never expect to actually speak to him on the phone anyways. Voice mail to his direct line can be done after office hours. My thoughts have always been with Brindi and Francesca. You will win this obcene battle. You will!!! Keep up the good work and continue to think positive thoughts.

    • We will win!!! I have been emailing Mayor Kelly every day. He responded the first few times but has stopped. I hope he is overwhelmed. He knows the world is watching!

  • wow Halifax is more screwed up than Winnipeg, and thats the lowest of lowest. I was going to move there, this summer, but believe it or not my mind has changed. it sounds like halifaxes govt is pretty messed up to me, and i would never want to bring my 2 dogs up in a place like Halifax. also the mayor sounds like a moron, and a coward, who needs that kind of a person running a province you live in, yikes

    • DEFİNİTELY cowardly. İ called several times to the mayors office from Turkey and kept getting the same response ''the mayor is forbidden by law to intervene. '' Yup pure cowardice. Oh so people don't have a voice for their own opinions?

  • I am trying to contact the mayors office with the number provided, however, it is not working is there an alternate number for the mayors office? I am calling for the states.

    • İ called the number and got through directly.did you dial the country code?

  • I have been following this case since it began – and I find Mayor P Kelly’s ignorance on Brindi’s life digusting. Please let Brindi go back to her rightfull owner and let her live her life out in peace.

  • I just called the mayors office in Halifax and talked to the receptionist she told me that this is in court and could not comment on it, I asked when a decision would be made regarding Bindi's outcome since it is in court at the present time and all she could tell me was early March is what they are being told. Let's all keep our prays coming for Bindi, that a decision is made to save her life and send her home to her loving "mother" before her days are over.

    • Thanks Tammi..

The issue has become too big for them to brush it under the table… :-)
      Many thanks for your help.

  • [...] Day 8. Brindi: Social Media Saves Lives « Let’s Adopt! Canada. [...]

  • It is time for Brindi to go home …I think Mayor Kelly political career is over if he doesn't act in favor of Brindi !

  • Brilliant response worldwide to Brindi. We have to have swayed the decision in favour of letting her back home where she belongs surely!!!!!!!! I cant imagine any other result now, she has to go home!!!!!!!!!!!!
Supporters of Animal cruelty, suffering and injustice really do know how to fight for a good cause, well done everyone involved in helping Brindi and her family.

  • I called mayor kellys office. THey said he has NO jurisdiction over the courts. He is not returning phone calls about this case

    • As mayor, the miserable little sob has jurisdiction over the city of Halifax to withdraw the charges against Francesca Rogier and drop the court case

  • I think a horrible miscarriage of justice has been allowed to go on for far too long. Brindi needs to go home where she belongs with her loving owner Francesca. If this is allowed to happen, if Brindi is given the death sentence for something other dogs in Halifax have done and only had their owners fined, there will be a public outcry like never heard before. We live in Canada. Canadians have a long history of being animal lovers and speaking as one such animal lover who has four of my own lovely dogs… LET BRINDI HAVE JUSTICE!!!

  • We have 6 days. Lets get the newspapers, TV stations, anyone that can get the word out to band together for Brindi and Francesca. College newspapers, animal rights publications. Wait outside the Mayors office, broadcast form where Brindi is being held. We can't be in the courthouse but we can be outside and all around it. It is time to rally and rally hard!!! If Brindi truly was a danger this would not have went on for so long. They made a mistake and we won;t allow it to be covered up. President Obama is an animal lover, lets get anyone and EVERYONE involved.
There can be only ONE outcome ~ Brindi and Francesca together!
Free Brindi, its the only thing to do.

  • Hopefully they will also recind the fees which are now around $14475. They should definitely remember that. I imagine that will be the next cuase for holding onto Brindi will be the fee has to be paid. I guess also that the calls should be going to the Priminister since the mayor apparently, haws no authority. Wonder what he gets paid for, what does he do if not govern the laws of the town?

  • there should be camera's allowed in court so people can see the jerks Francesca is up against. The judge at the February 23 hearing mumbled and had her hand on her face – to hold up her head throughout her whole speech. Such disrespect towards Francesca I thought.

    • not only cameras, all the brindi supporters in canada who can make it there, to carry out sentence on the mayor if necessary!

  • The pound should sneak Brindi out to Fran in the middle of the night and they should RUN! Instead of Americans chanting Run Bambi Run, Canadians can chant RUN Brindi Run! ;-) and I'm not joking.

  • I agree that this case is nothing more than a power struggle between the bureaucrats in the city of Halifax and the owner of the dog and that the one who will pay is the dog. She will pay dearly with her life. I certainly have contacted the mayor's office and voiced my opinion.

  • Brindi and Francesca, You are on our minds and in our hearts and we wish a speedy reunion! A few of us in Edmonton have taken up the reigns flooding Kelly's inbox. The time distance makes getting a hold of him difficult, but I left a couple messages. HE'S NOT GETTING AWAY WITH SITTING ON HIS DUFF!

  • Our mayor Peter Kelly is a fence sitter. He hops off the fence to serve hot dogs & hambergers at places like Macdonalds only to get his name & face in the news.A past councillor did the same thing name & face in the news whenever possible. He is now a Liberal MLA.Peter Kelly has the same ambitions for the future.Whatever his future ambitions are the case of Brindi will be brought to the publics attention.
You all are wasting your time emailing & calling on telephone his staff censors all his calls.
MLA Peter Stoffer said many time that Peter Kelly could have stopped this assinine situation right from the start.

  • Being an avid animal lover and a patriot..I yet respected countries like Canada, US, UK, etc. only for their compassion towards animals. I’m not new to the fact how animals, especially stray dogs in India, are treated, tortured or killed. Its a sad state of affairs. There would be no more a heinous crime than not letting Brindi free. I always though people who committed crimes were called criminals, but it would be sad if carriers of justice are the cause for miscarriage of justice. With due respect, Mr Mayor, there may be a hundred loopholes in any law, including lack over jurisdiction over this particular matter, but at the end of the day, we are all answerable to the Almighty. Mr. Mayor..let me ask you a question…do you have the power to create life or destroy the same? The answer is NO..coz you’re not GOD. A lot of books say..there’s a purpose each one of us in born for….life passes you by..and you never realize what you were born for. Mr. Mayor..since you have the right and power in your hands…you are definitely born to save the life of a creature who can’t even defend itself..since it does not speak the language you understand. I understand that the Canada constitution does not provide for national protection for all animals including lab animals. Be the change !! If I were in your position, and assuming that you don’t love animals, further assuming that you truly hate them, I would still SAVE BRINDI !! Why ?? It would be the biggest boost ever to my political career..(i) proposal to amend the Constitution suitably and (ii) support of the citizens of Canada. What else do you need to succeed in life ?? Very few people get to play God on earth, you are among the lucky few..SAVE A LIFE !! I know there are lakhs of animal lovers like me, all across the world, all trying to convince you to SAVE BRINDI and Francesca as well. A man acts with free will creating his own destiny. According to the Vedas, if we sow goodness, we will reap goodness; if we sow evil, we will reap evil. Karma refers to the totality of our actions and their concomitant reactions in this and previous lives, all of which determine our future and future lives as well. ..SEND BRINDI HOME PLEASE !! I’m confident will !!

  • If that were my dogs I'd be being held captive, because I'd have went for Mayor Kelly's throat myself! I get annoyed with the US at times, but this is one example of "God bless America" Doing a great job with the animal lovers there buddy, I hope you've got as good a hiding spot as Bin Laden.

  • KON LA LAISSE EN VIE AVEC SA PATRONNE

  • can anyone share the latest on this case of Brindi? It is 14th of March 2010 and I am wondering after all the avoidance and deflecting, do the police of Halifax have proof that Brindi is in fact, still alive?
