WHAT IF city authorities arrived at your door one night with a warrant to SEIZE AND DESTROY your family pet… what would you do?

“From the minute they drove the big white truck away with Brindi sitting quietly in a locked metal cage, I began looking for help everywhere and anywhere – that is, after I finished screaming long and hard, enough to damage my vocal chords… For me, the excruciating pain of separation is compounded by horror and disbelief that in a case where no serious harm was inflicted, the city will actually kill a dog rather than punish me, her human owner and the responsible party.” [August 2008]

WHAT IF the same by-law that brought them to your door — a by-law designed to safeguard the city — offered you no option for challenging this warrant… what would you do?

“For the last ten days, I have been phoning, emailing, and visiting people, soliciting letters of support, and basically going crazy…. As a single woman, public safety is certainly important to me. I do not want people to worry about walking by my house. I have offered to install a fence right away, and work with a special trainer to correct her behavior. I will pay whatever fines and boarding costs are imposed. Animal Services has not responded to my offer, and the city’s lawyer declined my lawyer’s proposal to send Brindi to stay at an out of town facility until her behavior can be improved. Instead, Halifax appears determined to kill my dog.”[August 2008]

Between January 2007 and March 2010, THIRTY-ONE dogs were seized and destroyed IN HALIFAX by the letter of these very by-laws.

In 2008, one woman dared to stand up to the city and fight to save her dog.

It’s now the end of March, 2010, and she is STILL fighting.

Please call and/or email the Mayor of Halifax and the head of the city’s Legal Department. Ask them to correct this iniquity and return Brindi to her owner, Francesca Rogier.

It should not be wrong to stand up for what is right.

  • It would break my heart. They are voiceless

    • Seems sometimes like WE are voiceless, too.

  • I would be heartbroken if I lost meepit and cheeko.

  • I am a firm believer in the rights of individuals and I believe if the authorities of my city knocked at my door with a warrant to seize and destroy my family pet I would have no choice but to fight fire with fire and charge them with an appropriate crime. First, I would refuse entry to my home and if that failed I would arrest them on charges of malicious prosecution or if necessary I would apply a charge of "treason" which is a crime against humanity. I was once told that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. We might want to remember what happened in Nazi Germany during WWII. It is almost as if the authorities think they have the right to violate the rights of others without a hearing to justify its actions. Lest we forget. Amen

    • well said…, thanks for the post

  • Decent people and animals suffer every day throughout the world. Criminals walk away unpunished.

  • The maddening part is, how long they have dragged this out – I'm not sure if it's still "federal law" in Canada, but if you are involved in a court case, the courts have 24 months to deliberate the case, if they do not make a solid solid, case in those 24 months, then it is thrown out of court…. I really don't think that the courts in Nova Scotia are THAT busy, but I have hoped that indiscreetly, the system is dragging this out to place the case in Brindi's favor – Something similar happened to me and it took just under 2 yrs to clear the case. I had a 5-6 month old Rotty-Terrier Mix bit a post office worker and knowing what could happen, I hid her till the case was over, saying she went to a farm – but to have had bylaw show up and take her away – I would have lost it!!! Well, we are into April and soon we will know what will happen…. it has been unfair to Francesca and definately unfair to Brindi who was a rescued babe – who was homeless, then found love and a home, to be ripped away – how confusing and depressing it must have been, not only for Francesca but for Brindi too – we are all sending positive energy and thoughts to them both!!!

  • my babies are my life and it would break my heart.. i dont know what i would do.. and what i would do i cant mention here.. so lets just say i am blessed and i thank u god for your mercy daily.. as for the person or shelter removing this dog with all the homless animals…shame on you.. but again we all will face the judgement of GOD.. WOW TO THOSE WHO MOCK THE WORDS OF GOD.. THESE ARE God's creations and he suffers the wrong that is being done.. i pray for u brinki for i know u must be scared feeling alone and wondering what wrong did u do.. forgive the ignorance of society..
