What is your nationality? Are you Irish, Turkish, German, Canadian? What if I told you that because one of your fellow countrymen committed a crime the government was going to round up everyone of your nationality and incarcerate or euthanize them. Simply because of their nationality and the fact that they MIGHT commit a crime thousands perhaps millions of people would be banned from existence all because of one bad apple. “Ridiculous” you’d say.”That would never happen.” Perhaps not, but in Ontario if you’re a pit bull the above is reality.
Since August 29th, 2005 Pit bulls and pit bull mixes have been a banned breed in Ontario. Since that date it has been illegal to take possession of or breed a pit bull in Ontario. Dogs already living in the province prior to the breed ban could stay but only if owners followed some very strict conditions set out by the province. Problem is, the law’s definition is so broad that many dogs who have no “pit” in them have been targeted and either euthanized or forced to leave the province unless their owners could prove in court they were not pit bulls.
BSL is responsible for the deaths of thousands of dogs over the past five years. Some of which were not affected breeds but were misidentified by animal control workers or police officers. You may ask “why should I care? don’t have a pit bull, the ban doesn’t affect MY dog.” Of course now that the “pit bull threat” has been dealt with some other breed will step up to take its place in the bite statistics, how long will it be before YOUR dog is affected by the breed ban?
For those of you who do not clearly understand why overturning the breed ban is so important, I leave you with the following images of what one city’s BSL laws resulted in:

Thank you Janette! And I would like to add that the whole premise that “pitbulls” or “pitbull mixes” are vicious is false. So even when the province does properly identify a “pitbull” (and yes, I know that there really is no such thing as a pitbull… they are talking about 3 distinct breeds that are lumped together and called “pitbulls”), it is ridiculous to assume the dog is a vicious dog. Like people, each dog has its own personality… some dogs are friendly and love people, and some dogs are unfriendly and don’t love people. This is true of dogs of all breeds! Each dog should be evaluated on its own merit. If there is a vicious labrador that bites people, then that situation needs to be dealt with. If there is a vicious chow, then address that. If there is a vicious “pitbull” then handle that. So many dogs that have attacked have been misidentified as “pitbulls” when in fact they weren’t actually either of the 3 breeds associated w/pitbull. Each dog should be treated as an individual, and we need to hold owners responsible for their dogs. If owners were held responsible, then I think things would change. Thanks Janette!

This is the most disgusting and disturbing thing I think I have ever seen!!! I can not believe that human beings are doing this. WHY can’t people understand it’s the owners fault and not the dogs. Do they really think this will wipe out the pitbull population and why because of a few individuals that thought having a vicious dog was something like a statis symbol. I didn’t become a pitbull lover until 2yrs ago, I always thought they were not very nice looking…but I totally fell in love with one. He is the calmest most loving dog and he is as cute as can be. This dog wouldn’t hurt a sole and I would stake my life on that.. These people that are destroying these dogs should be totally ashamed of themselves and I hope they have trouble sleeping at night…I know I will after seeing these pictures. I totally believe they should lift the ban and put restrictions on the owners of these beautiful dogs. Some kind of screening process and make the owners responsible.

I shared on FB – I also advise of “caution graphic pics”, and also added “however, this IS the reality due to Breed Specific Legislation”.
