We are going to leave Canada for today so that we may speak of concerns over an event taking place in Europe. EURO DOG SHOW 2012 is scheduled to take place in Bucharest, Romania in October 2012. Normally we would not be this up in arms about a country holding a dog show, but when it comes to Romania all bets are off.
Romania recently made international news in the animal world when they proposed a plan to reduce the population of stray dogs on the streets of the city of Bucharest by killing them.
Bucharest, Romania Proposes Law That Would Legalize Killing Stray Dogs
In this day and age when so many of us are fighting to end the needless killing, and promote spay and neuter surgeries, Romania wants to take a step backward and make it legal to kill strays. The fact that they are now scheduled to hold a show which is supposed to promote dogs is hypocrisy at it’s finest!
It is clear that in Romania dogs are either an asset, or a throwaway commodity. Purebreds are praised while just around the corner someone is murdering an innocent animal for the crime of having no home. Supporting this dog show by attending would be supporting the suffering of hundreds of animals, but apparently Romanian authorities did not see the irony in this when planning and promoting their event.
Personally I would have to say that a country in which dogs are disposable at the convenience of humans, is no place for a dog show of any sort. Thousands of animal lovers all over the world agree, and are calling for a cancellation of the show. One Let’s Adopt member expressed her disgust by posting the following on the EURO DOG Show 2012 Facebook page :
“Romania is becoming frightened of the media exposing their mass killings!! They should have thought of exposure well before they made this awful decision! This news is going global. Any animal lovers against Romanian brutality contact your local European tv networks with emails & radio stations too! Everyone can do their bit to pressure Romania into changing the way they handle animals! We stand united against Romania!”
We agree! What’s more? We have lots of time to band together and put pressure on the Romanian government to do the right thing in dealing with it’s stray street animals. Don’t sit back and allow Romania’s hypocrisy to continue, TAKE ACTION. Let’s let Romania know that we will not stand idly by while they murder some innocent animals and make money off the backs of others!
Until Tomorrow Remember
BE THE CHANGE YOU SEEK!

Hypocrisy, indeed! Save the money and help the animals without homes. Don’t tell the world you love dogs and then destroy them!
Monika says:
that is what I call politics! after all noise we made about cruelty in Romania, organisers trying to show that is not so bad….. is same like in the past making olympics games in China, is all about money and showing something what is not true, and pretending!!! all of it is pure HYPOCRISY and IGNORANCE!!!!
Magdalena Szaszorowska says:
I just hope that people will not be fooled by this show and will know the truth, and the truth is that romania is hell to be for animals, especially homeless.
joan e oswald says:
Is this supposed to be a joke as i am not laughing !!! Who is responsible for the decisuion to show in Rumania ??? Whoever they are should be shot ! Then again its a good reason now to protest ! Shows how much money is in the Dog busness!
Janette Hamilton says:
We don’t find it in any way amusing either Joan! There is a lot of money in the dog business you are right about that, but we have always known animals were big business. Now if we could only make countries like Romania understand that while they may be big business, they are not a commodity, we’d be doing well.
Kiki says:
Thank you for supporting our animal friends. I don’t know if you heard that two men who were trying to save stray dogs were murdered by the people who wanted to torture the pour animals. Even dog owners are harassed by those who hate animals, it sickness me that some people condemn and curse the ones who are trying to save them, the mass media instigates also to violence towards these animals. Please make sure this contest won’t be in Romania, and if the people don’t care about the strays they should care that no taxi will take them with their dogs and also there are no hotels that accept animals !
Jane Calladine says:
I know, I tried a link to Bucarest hotels for the dog show, out of ten I tried only one said they would accept dogs at a charge. hardly dog friendly
Lesley says:
They have an ‘event’ page for this show on facebook Janette!! Euro Dog Show 2012! I post there regular to condemn it.
Janine says:
This Euro Dog Show is an insult! For all the dogs that get preened and bathed and combed there are hundreds on the streets of the cold country of Romania all hungry and wanting love and affection. Instead they get ignored, or they get attacked or murdered. These dogs have found their way on the streets through no fault of their own. It is infuriating that Romania would much rather choose the vile way of killing them any which way.
Botosani shelter on the 11th May became a shelter of death and doom. Approximately 220 dogs were killed by either shot or by being beaten to death with crow bars by a “VET” of all people and/or shelter staff. The allegations of distemper being put into the equation. But, the volunteers that visited the day before took photographs showing healthy dogs not in any way lethargic or ill. Most of these dogs that were killed were neutered vaccinated and were on the rehome or foster list destined for new homes in the UK and Europe yet they had their lives taken away for no apparent reason. There has never been any test results shown to prove that the dogs were ill! MURDER IN THE 1ST DEGREE!!!
The attitudes of Romania need to change drastically, not just towards the stray dogs but also towards the horses. Danube Delta horses were removed from their natural habitat because “they are damaging the eco system” yet again photographs show this is untrue. Those horses, mares and new foals, most skin and bone were cruelly rounded and penned up and loaded onto a double decker livestock lorry designed for cattle and driven 21 hours without food or water or rest towards their last destination – a slaughterhouse. During the journey some magnificent people followed this truck approximately 40 people and they managed alongside police to stop this lorry and find a friendly farmer who would allow the horses to be unloaded as it was clear there were fallen and injured horses who needed desperate attention. The sight of those horses leaving that lorry will remain with me skin and bone, a dead grey mare, injuries, dehydration. These animals were unfit for human consumption having apparently been labelled as being diseased. But regardless these beautiful horses did not deserve this. The grey mare that sadly fell and died had a 6day foal that was removed from her and since has also died. This is a crime to animal welfare once again.
Land management education, spay and neuter, animal responsibility and education are desperately required. Shelters need decent staff, sack the old ones and employ some genuine animal lovers who would take care of the dogs in their care. This country needs to change NOW!!! it angers me also that the UK makes donations via its taxes to Romania and has done for a number of years! Where has this money gone to? Clearly its not gone to help these needy dogs. Rules need to be inplace regarding people who abuse or injure an animal there needs to prosecutions.
ROMANIA NEEDS TO SAY NO TO EUTHANASIA AND ANIMAL CRUELTY FOREVER!
Sorina Blinkhorne says:
Hypocrite Romanians!
Jane Calladine says:
Absolute atrocity that a Euro Dog Show should be allowed in this country of Romania. The government sits Tuesday 21 June in yet another attempt to pass a law to euthanise all strays, euthanise meaning slaughter (google Botosani May 11 and see how 220 dogs were massacred in two hours). They keep postponing hoping to get a majority vote. all this will do is legalise what they do now, every single day. If they don’t like to treat strays with compassion, then they should not be allowed to host a show for the obviously financial compensation aspect. CANCEL THIS SHOW
Lesley says:
As a British citizen I find this absolute hypocrisy to choose Romania to host any dog show! Every week they are murdering & torturing dogs in their hundreds! In Botosani animal shelter recently they mudered well over 200 dogs overnight!!! By order of authorities. In Tulcea they are burning them alive! No they don’t even euthanise dogs there they tranquilise & throw them into incinerators!!! And they have the audacity to host a dog show in October 2012. It should be rescheduled to another European country. One that has no record of such horrors! Romania is part of the E.U. but it is a world apart from western Europe! It’s government are corrupt. It’s people intimidated. And it’s animals tortured & killed in many ways! Don’t take my word for it. Check the information circulating on the internet. Check videos on ‘youtube’ and see for yourself!
Athena Savva says:
Come on Romania, think about what you are doing. You have attrated so much negative publicity in the last few weeks. You are going to hurt your two biggest sources of income, the tourist market and the investment property market.
Do the right thing and give the dogs their RIGHT to live. Train them to help the sick, the traumatised children, the blind. Make them useful and loved and not unwanted and discarded.
Each dog breathes, has feelings and has a right to a life, one that was goven to them by a power much higher than any polititian, nobody has the right to take a life, be it human or animal!
Roula Russell says:
This is a insult to all those dogs that have been killed for greedy money this must not go ahead in Romania the animals are not treated correctly even though they have laws they are ignored and the animals are caught brutally then brutally killed!
Please act DO NOT LET THIS GO AHEAD! Choose a better country that is more humane to animals! Romanian government you shameful!
toni says:
Holding a dog show in a country who has scant regard for animal welfare, is the wrong thing to do. I have seen some very distressing images of how the Romanian treat there stray dogs. oh the hypocracy of it all
Vigdis Allister says:
Romania is a country in shame now because of the way they treat animals, specially dogs. Its just a joke that they want to have a dog show there !
Dogs gets beaten to death, burnt alive ! The abuse is unbelieveable !
I feel sick after seeing all documentation, pictures and videos of the abuse for weeks now.
If they vote yes to death of all street dogs 21.june it will turn out as one of the worse animal disasters in history !
Vigdis Allister, Oslo, Norway.
Marlene says:
Dogs are living, lovely, loyal creatures. They only wish to be loved. How can so many humans be so cruel towards them! It is real disgusting! Boycott Romania for everything! Especially Euro Dog Show 2012!
lynda says:
The world is watching …..make the right decision ……spay the dogs…..instead of brutally killing them….why are they hated so much that are killed in such horrific ways….

Giulia says:
Hi, my name is Giulia and I live in Romania.
Yes, I have the courage to admit that and not ashamed about it, despite of all of you haters, who just sit back and comment from the outside.
Indeed what is happening with the stray dogs here is a shame and very sad.
What you all don’t know is that the majority of our population is protesting and fighting against it! So interesting that about the meetings and protests we organized against this you didn’t hear.
I have worked with associations that try to find homes for these dogs and I know and seen the despair having no help from authorities and being forced to move away the shelter because the land owner wants us there no more.
So before you generalize, please sit back for a moment, breathe and think about what you write. It is as easy for you to write as it is hard for us to fight against the system.
What is important for you all to know is that we do have hearts and we care!
Also, we would really use your help and indeed of writing hateful comments why not sign our petitions? That would be appreciated.
Thank you for understanding.

Kiki says:
What haters are you talking about ?! These people are really helping… why are you insulting them ? Two people were murdered while they were trying to save some stray dogs, people who care for these animals are harassed… think a little before you write ! OK ?! The majority of Romanians hate dogs and the people that take care of them, I’m Romanian too so I know what I’m talking about. You really want this contest to be held in Romania so some greedy people can make more money ?!! FOR WHAT ?! WAKE UP GIULIA !!!!!!!
Ana says:
and why do you generalise? why hypocrites?
i don’t see you going around hating all germans because of hitler…
there are still people that are romanians and that care about animals.
come on, people….
