This is Chloe, until being rescued by her present foster Chloe lived her life on the streets despite the fact that someone called themselves her “owner” this is what Chloe’s present foster has to say about Chloe:

I rescued Chloe a while ago. She was pregnant when rescued, and had lived her entire life outside. Chloe is a lovable and affectionate orange tabby female who is approximately 3 years old. She loves to be pet and played with, and she very much loves a good cuddle every once in a while. However, Chloe was originally an outdoor cat and only made the transitsion to indoor cat last year when I moved to Toronto for college. Because Chloe is so used to being able to go out whenever she wishes, we have had some problems with her protesting her not being let out. Chloe gets very anxious and starts to circle my apartment in a hunt-like trance and often will howl to be let outside, but alas, I cannot. This has led to some urinating on items of mine, but would stop if I could let her outside once or twice a day. Really what I am trying to say is that Chloe is a great cat, she just needs a home where she can be outside just as much as she is inside, and where she will have someone to love her and take care of her until her day has come. I am a student and an apartment dweller which does not lend itself to having an outdoor/indoor cat, Chloe needs more than I can give. I must find her a home so I can foster other animals in need.

Do you think you could give Chloe a loving home?

The usual Let’s Adopt conditions apply:

1.  Family MUST have at least one other animal.

2.  Chloe will be an indoor cat. Access to garden is essential.

3. Chloe will eat a raw dietwww.rawfedcats.org

This afternoon my husband and I must attend the provincial courts and defend our dogs. Let me explain. We live in a city that thinks pet limit laws make responsible pet owners. Barrie Ontario has limited the number of dogs a person can own to three.  I have eight dogs. Eight dogs no one else wanted, eight dogs that are alive because we do not believe they deserve to die . Now five of those dogs are in danger once again. The city wants to remove them from our loving home and place them in the shelter system. In other words they wish to take dogs with loving homes and make them homeless.

The city would do better to concentrate on complaints about pet owners who are not caring for their pets, there are enough of them out there, such as my neighbor across the street who tie their hound mix out in the yard and allow him to howl all day. Or the gentleman (I use the term loosely) three blocks away who beats his dog every time it barks at a passing stranger.

Our dogs are vetted regularily (I have the vet records to prove it) they are well fed well exercised and well trained, after all I am a dog trainer. I have been rescuing and rehoming animals at my OWN expense for years. I have the vet bills to prove that too. No animal leaves my care until it has been spayed or neutered, also at MY expense. Two years ago an eleven year old rescue who had been thrown away by her backyard breeding owners because she could no longer have puppies was fixed and vetted at an expense of over $1600.00. We then placed her in a loving home at no cost to the new owner. Had this dog ended up in the shelter system she would have been euthanized as unadoptable because of her age and temperment before the surgery she required to fix her rotting teeth.

If the city gets their way, I will be unable to help these dogs and give them a second chance. That is why we need YOU Canadians. We need you to tell the city of Barrie that their bylaws KILL good dogs who have done nothing wrong. We need you to tell them that our dogs deserve a second chance at life. We need you to make them understand that dogs are living things and not a commodity to be traded.

Please write to city hall and City Council and tell them the Hamilton dogs have done nothing wrong and should be left alone. You can reach Mayor Aspden and the city council at the following email addresses:

Please help us save the lives of our dogs!

What is your nationality? Are you Irish, Turkish, German, Canadian? What if I told you that because one of your fellow countrymen committed a crime the government was going to round up everyone of your nationality and incarcerate or euthanize them. Simply because of their nationality and the fact that they MIGHT commit a crime thousands perhaps millions of people would be banned from existence all because of one bad apple. “Ridiculous” you’d say.”That would never happen.” Perhaps not, but in Ontario if you’re a pit bull the above is reality.

Since August 29th, 2005 Pit bulls and pit bull mixes have been a banned breed in Ontario. Since that date it has been illegal to take possession of or breed a pit bull in Ontario. Dogs already living in the province prior to the breed ban could stay but only if owners followed some very strict conditions set out by the province.  Problem is, the law’s definition is so broad that many dogs who have no “pit” in them have been targeted and either euthanized or forced to leave the province unless their owners could prove in court they were not pit bulls.

BSL is responsible for the deaths of thousands of dogs over the past five years. Some of which were not affected breeds but were misidentified by animal control workers or police officers. You may ask “why should I care? don’t have a pit bull, the ban doesn’t affect MY dog.”  Of course now that the “pit bull threat” has been dealt with some other breed will step up to take its place in the bite statistics, how long will it be before YOUR dog is affected by the breed ban?

For those of you who do not clearly understand why overturning the breed ban is so important, I leave you with the following images of what one city’s BSL laws resulted in:

Do you know my name? I wouldn’t be surprised if you did, strangers recognizing me is somewhat of an occupational hazard since I began working full time with rescues. People know me when I walk down the street or comment in an internet forum. They stop me and try to pick my brain for training tips, or spend five minutes praising the work I do and telling me what a great person I am for doing it. What they do not do is ask about the animals I work with, and therein lies the problem.

I did not begin rehabilitating rescued dogs with the intention of becoming “known”. I began rehabilitating rescues because I truly wished to give them a second chance. Besides I owe the species my life. Just over twenty years ago a dog gave her life to save mine. I feel it is only right to dedicate the rest of my life to ending the pain and suffering of her fellow dog (and cat, horse, bird, rat, etc.) whenever I can. To me that means saving and removing them from an abusive or otherwise detrimental situation, seeing that they are properly socialized and trained, and finding them homes that fit right with their individual needs and personality.

What I do is a labor of love. It gives my life meaning, but I do not want to be glorified for doing it. I just want to be left in peace to do what I do best, rescue and rehabilitate animals. I do not want to be known, I do not want you to remember my name. I want you to remember THEM, the animals I help. I want you to thank me by stepping up and saying “I have room in my heart and my home for one more, and I can make a difference!” I don’t want your praise, I NEED your support, I need you to thank all animal rescue workers out there in the best way you possibly could, by stepping forward to help make a difference.

DON’T GIVE ME PRAISE! Forget my name. Remember the animals! FOSTER! ADOPT! Your support is my reward. BE THE CHANGE! That is all the thanks or praise I want or need.

Until Tomorrow Remember,

BE THE CHANGE

We can end the needless suffering of abused and abandoned animals, but we need YOU to help us.

We all want to do what is best for our pets, but very often we forget that if we choose to keep pets we also have a responsibility to society, to ensure that our love of our pets does not interfere with any one else’s enjoyment of life. After all just because you LOVE Fido and can overlook his little habit of barking at shadows at two in the morning, doesn’t mean your next door neighbor feels the same way. Here are some tips on being a responsible pet owner just to remind us of our responsibility to society, and to our pet:

1.) DO adopt! DON”T buy.

Especially from pet stores, you don’t want to support puppy mills do you? Puppy mills treat dogs terribly caging them for life. Once they have outlived their “usefulness” to the puppy mill owner, they are killed usually by drowning or bludgeoning.

2.) DO spay/neuter! DON’T breed.

Your pet is not a commodity. She was not born to make you money no matter how bad the economy might be. YOU love her, you do not have to spread her genes around because she is “such a perfect dog.” Having her spayed is the responsible thing to do, not to mention the healthiest option for your dog or cat. Be sure to do so between 6 and 8 months of age.

3.) DO make sure your pet sees a vet! DON’T forget that their shots should be up to date, keep records for emergencies.

Your pet is important to you and proper veterinary care will prolong their life. Taking your pets for regular checkups is just as important as YOUR yearly physical.

4.) DO make sure your dog is properly trained.  DON’T attempt to train your dog yourself if you have no experience.

Proper training and socialization is necessary to raise a good canine or feline citizen. It is up to you as the pet owner to ensure that your beloved pets are not interfering with other people’s peaceful enjoyment of life. YOU love your pet, not everyone else does. Make sure that your pet is properly trained and controllable in social situations. Consult a trainer or attend obedience classes with your dog if necessary.

5.) Lastly but probably most importantly, DO feed your pet a RAW diet! DON’T kill them slowly with commercial garbage in a bag!

A raw diet is the ONLY natural diet for your furry friend. Both cats and dogs are naturally carnivores, that means they eat meat, and only meat. Sure a dog will eat a carrot if you give them one but they were not meant to survive on a vegan diet. Commercial dog food has little or no healthy meat content. Most brands of kibble are full of fillers and other things I would truly rather not mention. Raw is the ONLY way to go if you are serious about the health of your pet!

Skeptical about raw feeding? Don’t take my word for it do your own research, start here:  RawFed.com

I have spent the past twenty years of my life rescuing animals. Usually I take them in, rehabilitate and retrain them, make sure they are healthy with a visit to the vet, and find them good homes. Many animals have passed through my doors over the years. Every once in a while an animal comes along that for one reason or another proves to be unadoptable. I strongly believe in NO KILL so when this happens the animal stays with me for life. It is for this reason that I now share my life with eight dogs and six cats. This is the normal course of life for my husband and I, so we never gave a second thought to how many there are. We take full responsibility for each and every one of them. They are properly vetted and cared for. They are family.

Now the city of Barrie, Ontario, Canada, wants to make five of our dogs homeless, and they want US to choose which will stay and which will go to a shelter. If placed in the shelter system most of them will be labeled unadoptable and euthanized. Seems they have some silly bylaw that says a person may only keep three dogs. They say that any number over and above that three are extra dogs and must be disposed of. What I ask you is an “extra” dog? They act as if I have too many pairs of shoes.

I am obviously not willing to allow this to happen, and plans are in motion to sell our home and move where our dogs will be safe from ridiculous arbitrary legislation that treats them like possessions instead of living things. Our first court date comes up next week, and we intend to fight for the lives of our dogs.

We need the help of fellow Canadians in that fight. We need you to write to Barrie city hall and tell the Mayor that our dogs do not deserve to be ripped from the only loving home they have ever known. Tell him that his city’s dog limit laws put innocent well cared for animals in danger. Let him know that dog limit laws DO NOT WORK! What is needed is tougher animal welfare legislation and prosecution of offenders. Tell him YOU as a Canadian will not stand by while the city of Barrie makes homeless pets out of animals with loving homes. Stand with us and fight for 5 animals whose only transgression is the fact that they have a loving home. They can not speak for themselves they need you and I to raise our voices and speak for them.

Here is Mayor David Aspden’s email address:

officeofthemayor@barrie.ca

Here is the email for city council>

deputations@barrie.ca

Please let him know that you do not agree with Barrie’s bylaw that makes animals with homes homeless. Tell him the Hamilton (our last name) dogs are not hurting anyone, they are simply living life with a family who loves them.
