Below is the text of a message I found in my inbox when I checked my email this morning.

“We reluctantly need to find a new home for our female cat. She is about 2 years old. She showed up on our doorstep a couple winters ago, and we gave her a home. She is spayed but not declawed. She is mostly white with a bit of black and orange.

We are having a baby and can lo longer keep her.

Please respond, with interest, questions or I can send pics if requested.

Thanks”

It came to me through a Yahoo freecycle group I belong to. You know, an email based group who share offers of unwanted items with other members of the group to attempt to keep items that are still in usable condition out of landfill sites. You may belong to a similar group in your area.

Now I have a serious problems with the above email, and since you have read it you probably do too! But I will illustrate my problem with it for those of you who have just landed here randomly

“WE ARE HAVING A BABY AND CAN NO LONGER KEEP HER” You’re kidding me, right?

What IS it with these people who think that they should give up their pets because they are having children? Is the decision to bring children into the world not supposed to be a sign of maturity and ability to accept responsibility for someone other than yourself?

To the writer of the above email and those who think like them, I have this to say; If you are planning on having a child don’t you think you should be capable of finding time to feed a cat and change it’s litter box? Do you not think that you can work less than ten minutes of actual physical time in a day to clean a litter box, and fill water and food dishes into your schedule? If you are about to have a baby don’t you think you should be capable of such basic time management?

Oh, and here’s something else for you to think about, if that cat were an older sibling, would you be rehoming it because there was a baby on the way? Of course you wouldn’t! So tell me, why would you think that it is okay to dispose of a cat you have been caring for for two years, just because there’s a baby on the way? Was THAT the commitment you made when you took the cat into your home and made it your pet?

Yesterday as I was just sitting down to write the blog, my phone rang. A friend had gone out to bring her garbage can in from the curb and to her surprise found that someone had dumped a tiny puppy in her trash bin. She called me immediately and we went and got the little pup whom we have named Angel.

Angel, according to vets is only 5 or 6 weeks old. She is in relatively good health, but was very hungry when found. After feeding her and settling her down in the playpen we keep on hand for puppies, she slept through the night. This morning it was a very excited little brown puppy who bit my toes to wake me.

I think Angel found our home a little intimidating when she first arrived, she spent most of last evening sleeping in my husbands lap and was wary of approaching the other dogs. This morning however, she seems to have forgotten her previous apprehension and is busy trying to get the big dogs to play with her, and of course getting into everything with typical puppy enthusiasm.

Vets believe Angel to be a Lab/Collie cross which means she will grow into a medium to large sized dog. Angel will need a home where someone is home during the day. She was taken from her mother too early and exhibits some separation anxiety when left alone.

Angel will need a foster or forever home. The usual Let’s Adopt Conditions apply:

1.) The applicant MUST have another animal, and that animal MUST be spayed or neutered.

2.) Angel will live inside the home not in the yard.

3.) Angel will be fed a raw food diet. (for information on raw feeding, see rawfed.com)

Anyone wishing to adopt or foster Angel, should contact:

Yesterday we released the results of Let’s Adopt Canada’s first annual calendar photo competition. Once again congratulations to the winners! The calendar is now in the stages of being set for print so go to the finalists album, and tell us which month you think each photo should appear.

That having been said, since we are in the print setting stages we have decided to offer our fellow Canadian rescue and advocacy groups a chance to get any events they have planned for 2012 into the calendar. Please send me the details of your event, the place, and time, and we will place it in the calendar so fellow Canadians can plan to attend. Information about 2012 events should be sent to:

janettehamilton@bell.net

These listings are free of charge for CANADIAN rescues and advocacy groups.

Please note: If you run a Canadian animal related business which DOES NOT sell animals and supports rescue and the no kill philosophy, we have ad space available in our calendar for a nominal fee. Inquiries about ad pricing can be sent to the aforementioned email address.

UPCOMING PHOTO & GRAPHIC DESIGN COMPETITIONS

Greeting Card Competition – Dust off your camera and get ready to snap a few great shots! Beginning July 1st, 2011 we will be looking for photos that make us smile! Is your pet a greeting card pet? Would a picture of him or her brighten up someone’s day? We are looking for great artistic photos of your pet. Photos that say “are you having a bad day? Well smile and look at this adorable pet” or that say “man I ate too much Christmas turkey!” or maybe even “I am filling in for the Easter Bunny!” Be creative! Above all make sure you and your pet spend some quality time together getting that perfect photo!

Graphic T-shirt Design Competition - We want the world to know that Let’s Adopt Canada members care! What better way than to display your association proudly by wearing a great graphic tee? I’d wear one if I had one, wouldn’t you? Beginning August first we will open submissions for our Graphic Tee Design Competition. We want you to design a T-shirt that says Let’s Adopt Canada cares! It must contain the Let’s Adopt Canada Logo (logo will be supplied for download when competition opens.) as well as our tag line, but the rest is all YOUR imagination. Again BE CREATIVE! Make it eyecatching, make it a design that says WE CARE! Happy designing!

I am taking this weekend off so there will be no Saturday or Sunday blogs this week. I will be making trips in the surrounding countryside searching for animals in distress in areas that are known for dumping. Should you need our assistance, I will be reachable, just leave me a message!

Have a great weekend everybody!
